Isotretinoin is used to treat severe cystic acne or nodular acne that has not responded to other treatments, including antibiotics. Severe acne causes deep, painful cysts and nodules, which can be the size of a pencil eraser or larger. As this acne clears, scars often appear.
Isotretinoin is in a class of medications called retinoids which works by slowing the production of certain natural substances that can cause acne.
PACKAGING & DOSAGE
Isotretinoin is usually taken twice a day. The starting dosage is usually calculated at 0.5mg per kilogram of body weight. For example, a person who weighs 60 kilograms will start at 30mg of Isotretinoin a day, divided into two doses. Isotretinoin treatment for acne typically lasts for 4 to 6 months.
